Svit, a town under the Tatras

Hi,

Svit is a small town located in Slovakia under the High Tatras. It is close to my heart because I went to the Marie Curie Sklodowská secondary industrial school here and I have very fond memories from that period. In this article, I would like to share some of them with you and tell you about Svit.

Why did I think of writing an article about Svita and right now? Well, it's not a coincidence at all. The reason is simple. A few days ago, my friend and I went to see our high school and walk around famous places.

We enter the city and our memories slowly come alive. Here we went for pizza, here again to sit. And we walked in this park... In short, it's a lot, because in four years a person experiences a lot.

The town of Svit was founded by Ján Antonín Baťa. The company Baťa wanted to build a large factory for the production of artificial silk on this site. And so, after the purchase of land from the surrounding municipalities in 1934, the construction of the factory and the first family houses began. The name of the city arose from the first factory that Baťa built here. Slovak viscose factories - SVIT. Currently, two large enterprises are located on the premises. Chemosvit and Tatrasvit, which employ many people from the surrounding area.

Considering the chemical nature of the companies, it is not surprising that a high school of chemistry is located here. In the days when I went to high school, there were two more apprenticeship schools here, which prepared students for work in these factories. It was a chemical and textile school. Over the years, all three schools merged into one.

We talked with our former teachers about how the school is now and, as usual, we reminisced about the good old days.

The bell rings for class and my friend convinces me to go sit in the school desks and take part in one lesson. I already had a hard time at school, so I rejected this option. So my friend went to class and I went to town with my camera.

The town of Svit has an inimitable character. The brick houses that were built here are unique and unmistakable far and wide. First, standard semi-detached houses with flat roofs were built for the workers, later terraced houses with sloping roofs and finally multi-storey apartment buildings. The former Slobodárne, which stands first behind the factory, was divided by gender. Women lived in one apartment building and men in the other.

The most beautiful building in the city, in my opinion, is the building that I saw during my student days and was always the first one when I arrived in the city. It is a railway station building. It has an unusual shape and is the most beautiful from the inside. From the inside we can see a stained glass window by the academic painter Vojtech Stašík. It is currently under renovation and I only managed to take a picture of it from the outside. But it's still worth it.

If I write about the most beautiful things in Svita from my point of view, I must clearly say that it is my high school dormitory that I have beautiful memories of. I found friends there with whom I am still in contact. Those were the times when I learned to play table tennis, and you could say that I spent my entire high school at the table. I have to admit that I didn't really want to study. But of course I have other experiences, but I'll keep those to myself for now.

This is our school. During my student days, it was called the Marie Curie Sklodowska Secondary Industrial School. I also have fond memories of that one, even though it was pretty rough at times during my time there. But as I mentioned above, I didn't really want to learn and I went to school with the knowledge I learned in school.

I would never say that there is a ski jump in a small town like Svit. So there used to be a jumping bridge here. Today there are only remnants of it, but it was in much better shape during my student days. Even though it didn't work at that time either. At one time, ski jumping was a popular sport in Slovakia, and several top athletes were trained in this industry. Today, it is completely different, and we can only find torsos from the many diving boards.

In the city park, which separates the industrial part from the residential part, there is a monument commemorating the heroes of the Second World War. After the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising, there was an arming center for volunteers in the town of Svit. Despite the fact that the city lies on a plain, in 1944 the insurgents waged a fierce battle for the city with fascist German troops, who attacked with the support of tanks and aviation. However, the city fell and was liberated on January 28, 1945.

As they say, best for last. I already mentioned Ján Antonín Baťa at the beginning of my post. It could be said that he was the founder of the city of Svit. Local residents hold him in high esteem, as evidenced by this statue in his memory.

Management of Baťa a.s. took over from his half-brother Tomáš Bať, after his tragic death. The monument to Tomáš Baťa, the founder of the shoe company Baťa, is also located in the town of Svit, in front of the factories.

Memories that I will have forever engraved in my memory with the city of Svit. They were amazing high school students good times and it's good for me to come here once in a while and take a walk around the old familiar places.

Well thank you.
