Tribal Life: Avocados a Cash Crop

in blurt •  2 years ago

Here at my girlfriend @junglegirl's tribe in Northern Thailand, Avocados are big business. Trees that were planted over a decade ago are now finally paying off and the fruit is being sent to markets all over the country. Avocados are a gift that keep on giving especially when the trees are as loaded up as the ones at the tribe.

There are several fields of avocados trees around the tribe, some grow Thai avocados but many have chosen to grow the world renown "Haas" avocado which you can see below. Both are delicious but I believe the Haas fetches top dollar.

Being from the tribe means you basically have all the Avocados you can eat for free. That's a whole lot of guacamole! In fact, that amounts to some serious coin if you're an avocado lover like me!

Now come along and have a closer look at some of these avocados from the tribe!

In Ghana were they even grow well it is about $0.50 to $1 for one depending on the size. But once again Accra is the most expensive city in Africa now.

Good to know...I'm starting to build up my Africa itinerary. I've been all over, but never Africa or India. Two huge parts of the world missing from my travel resume!

Great, I have not really been outside of West Africa but let me know if you want some help in West Africa. I can highly recommend India but I have only seen a sliver of it. Thailand is on my list as I was telling @junglegirl.

I hear from the hobo traveler on you tube, Togo is a comfortable African country to ease into...especially if you can speak some French.

Lome has been fun to visit I have not got around to other sides of Togo but if you speak french then yeah it would be great. It is a little cheaper then some of its neighbors like Ghana, Ivory Coast and maybe Benin. I have not been to Benin but it is supposed to be great also.

Good to know... if I ever make a trip to that part of the world, I'll certainly be sure to first get in touch with you! Looking forward to learning more through your excellent blog posts.

Thank you very much!

hmmm you have no idea how much I like avocados and we are precisely in avocado season here in Venezuela and I eat them every day for breakfast and in salads, currently I buy them for $1 a kilo because it is in season, last month they were in $3 a kilo.

That is one thing I love about living in the tropics, as the seasons change so does the fruit. My favorite sugar apple is now in season here, and other parts of the year it doesn't matter the price, you just can't find them. So I'm eating them about every day now.

That's cool, I've planted apple seeds but they don't germinate...
One day i will be successful lol.

I'm sure they will; after all...you are a blessed girl!

Some asshole has stolen you photo and peddling it as your own. I recommended this one to the coal list about a month ago and no action was taken. Maybe you can stir it up because I am tired of seeing his shit posts on my feed when curating. Sad thing is too that I have recommended a few other accounts to the coal list and no action was taken. I found someone stealing my posts on hive recently so this pisses me off even more seeing these shit posts.

@tim12345 take your shit posts somewhere else.

I also muted it with my account and the curation account, thanks for reporting.

Thank you buddy. Much appreciated. I see he's been rightfully coal listed now.

But my second thought is, this is almost comical.....

It almost cracks me as I wonder what the heck people are thinking to do such dumb shit.

Thanks again for your support and effort regarding all things BLURT!

I have muted that user, thanks for the heads up.

Thank You!

In Russia, it cost about 1/2 dollar per 100 gram. I don't know if that's expensive or not. It should be cheap there ?

wow for 100 grams? it is expensive there, here in Venezuela it normally costs $3 a kilo and right now we are in season and it costs $1 a kilo.

and how do they sell it? For example, 100 grams would sell you just one piece, and the avocado turns black after being opened for a long time.

Here in Thailand I can get a whole kilo for about a dollar. I'm sure they are far more expensive in Russia cause it's got to be an import item. Thanks for stopping by!

Where I live avocados are grown a lot, today by the way I bought a half kilo for $1 because I find it delicious and nutritious to eat them. By the way, I did not know that variety of avocados that you share with us, but they must still be delicious.

Yes, there are all sorts of everything it seems. In Ecuador there was even a larger variety I recall. They had some kind of avocado that was huge, looked like a green dinosaur egg or something. But yes, avocados are super healthy and delicious. If I'm going to eat it plain, I usually hit it with a little salt and lime.

Avocados are a great idea for a post : D
I haven't been buying them here lately, because most of them seem fine but end up ripening into mush. A few years back we got good avocadoes for $1 each, now they are 2.49 plus tax, and usually not edible so they end up being thrown out when they ripen. I would say about 90% of avocados brought into Canada are wasted.
One thing people don't know about avocados is they are berries.
You're lucky to get them whenever you want them! That's one of the big advantages to living in the tropics. You probably put up with more insects than we do here in Canada, and there are other pros and cons... but avocados are definitely a strong point for Thailand and anywhere else that gets sun year round.

God, what a pity that the avocados are spoiled there, so they should not sell them or lower the price.
There is avocado here all year round, I love that, but right now we are in season, that is, there is more avocado, you see it in every corner and of various types, I love the creamiest ones, there are some that are like water I also eat them but I prefer the creamy ones although sometimes they are more expensive.

I also prefer the creamy ones! It is a texture and flavour not available from any other plant source. I love to slice ripe avocado into my wraps, with tomato, hummus, cucumber, and sprouts.

Avocados are a great idea for a post : D

Better than dead chicken carcass! haha....you really triggered the shit out of me with your comment on that one. I haven't been able to look at myself in the mirror ever since....lol

But, for real.... I'm learning lots lately of how good I have it here in Thailand with fresh tropical fruit and veg year round for pennies on the dollar. For me being in Thailand was always about the nice weather, beaches, food, and cheap cost of living in general. But now more than even I'm realizing how fortunate I am to live in a place with a large abundance of high end produce for next to nothing prices.

What I need to do is start showing prices of things like cheese, wine, and electronics...suddenly Thailand doesn't look as good...or maybe talk about the ridiculously scolding hot after afternoons with heat index going consistently well above 40C, and how I had a bit of heat stroke and and a nasty headache, or the crappy third world sidewalks all over the country,...or as you mention... my ankles covered in mosquito bites....lol

One thing I've learned from nearly 20 years of international travel....no where is perfect.

Thanks for sharing and taking the time to comment as usual! :)

I guess there are pros and cons to just about everything...
LOL @ third world sidewalks. I'm not even happy with the sidewalks around my town here... I don't think I'd be very happy with the walking situation over there!! Then again, I'd probably get some sort of scooter thingy ...

I'm not a huge fan of them but a lot of people seem to like them.
Thinking about trying to grow them if I get a chance.

They are not easy to grow unless you're in the tropics. You can grow them from the seed of course, but it takes special techniques, and a VERY long time before you get any berries (avocados). You also have to grow at least 2 of them... a lot of people get 5 years into their little project before they realize that detail. If you don't enjoy them, maybe growing them is a good idea... because you won't get to eat them anyway and it will just be a (difficult and fussy) houseplant.

It shouldn't be too much of an issue for me here in Florida; In Puerto Rico, my family had a few of them. I've raised a few lemon trees from seed, it's a long process but doable. It will take months to germinate these seeds probably. lol

Yes I think Florida should be doable. Not that I've ever had an avocado from Florida, they always seem to come from Mexico, California, etc. Well you are up for the challenge, just research the nuances before you begin, many people spend a few years at it before they realize their mistake : p
