Alex hadn’t realised how late it was, turning his walk into a jog, and then into a run as the yellow bus came into view, lights flashing like it was preparing to leave.
“WAIT,” they both yelled one after the other, as the bus driver disappeared behind a pair of closing doors, “we need a ride to school”.

Luckily for them, the driver opened the doors and signalled them in, but no sooner where they through did he snap the doors shut again. After paying their fees for the journey, they were told, rather impolitely, to find a seat and sit down. There was only ever one place Alex and Peter liked to sit, and that was at the very back of the bus.

Their reasoning for this became clear as they walked through the isle, cheerleaders and athletes. They were a potent mix when together, especially in the confined space of a bus. One particular group of males, who Alex could only assume made up part of the school football team, were throwing a ball to each other. They didn’t seem to care if the ball hit someone, in fact; they appeared to prefer it.

Peter was shuffling up behind him, muttering something derogatory about athletes under his breath. He’d just opened his mouth to tell Alex to hurry up and get to their seats, when suddenly he went flying forward, landing face down on the floor with a thump. The bus erupted into raucous laughter, as Peter tried to rise and stumbled again.

“Did you have a nice trip?” came a sarcastic voice from behind him, “you better watch those big clumsy feet of yours”.
Another wave of laughter spread through the bus, as a tall girl with long blond hair stood up and smiled.
“Hello Alex,” she said in a tone of mock sincerity, “how are you and my idiot brother this morning? Late as usual, I see”.

Jessica Stormball was every bit as beautiful as her mother, but where her mother was protective, Jessica delighted in tormenting her brother. If you didn’t know they were siblings, you wouldn’t have believed they were blood related. With icy blue eyes, and a body that attracted all the right attention, she was the polar opposite of Peter.

“Mum showed me your lacy red underwear” she teased, smiling menacingly as Peter’s cheeks flushed redder than a tomato.
A natural cheerleader, Jessica had the flair, confidence, and charisma to stand out. She was also very good at making Peter feel small, pointing and encouraging her other cheerleading friends to make fun. Tripping him up on the school bus was just one of a long list of horrible things she’d done to him while growing up. Peter had spent time locked in bathrooms, lockers, and even in the boot of his parents’ car, and every time, Jessica would walk away without a single telling off. School was easy for her, as was life in general.

She aced every class, attaining top marks in any exam put before her. Peter knew it was all a façade, a way of convincing people that she was sweet and innocent, the darling daughter of the Stormball family.
“You’re the devil reborn,” he whispered to himself, careful not to let Jessica hear him say something so crude about her.

She had caught the ball being thrown around by the football team and was preparing to launch it at Peter and Alex, when a loud voice came bellowing from the font of the bus.
“WILL YOU ALL BE QUIET PLEASE”

Let our children not grow up in a terrible world. Together we can make it better. It is our destiny to
suffer from the past, to long for the future, but to forget the present.
