Comix Zone is a side-scrolling, beat-'em up video game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1995.

When it came out in my country in 1996, it blew everyone away with its great gameplay and comic book-style graphics. I always wondered why Sega never bothered to create a sequel or follow up to it.

The Story

Enter the COMIX ZONE as Sketch Turner, a street-wise comic book artist who gets trapped in his created comic book world. Warp into the Comix Zone with all the action and adventure of your favorite comics! Battle through full comic book pages. Sharpen your fighting skills to defeat mutant enemies drawn in by your enemy, Mortus. Tore up the page with superhero power-ups and lots of intense fighting moves!

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics are some of the best on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. The game has backgrounds that have that comic book style to them, and the well-animated sprites fit in with it. You would really think you are watching a comic book go to life.

The music pushes the console beyond what it normally does, but the sound is nearly impressive. The music consists of memorable rock music and emulated guitar riffs, while the sound effects are good and the voices are cheesy.

The Gameplay

You play the role of a young comic book illustrator who has been transported into one of his own comic books by an evil cartoonist. Now, to escape, you have to fight your way through the pages of your comic book and face your own creations.

You start out in someplace where you meet a girl who gives you a few weapons. You also have the companionship of your pet rat who sometimes finds secret stuff for you in the pages. He also attacks your enemies but it is also vulnerable to attacks. You have to fight enemies or solve puzzles in each comic book panel, before you can get to the next one. Text boxes show your dialogue with your creations. You also have some speech in the game. After each page you fight a boss and if you are successful, you go to the next page.

Before you start the game, you have a choice of a few special attacks such as a special kick. Sometimes you can also rip out a piece of paper from the wall and make a paper airplane and throw it at the enemy.

The controls are good and the replay value is great. It is still fun to play the game again to beat it.

My Verdict

Despite the lack of unlockable features, extras, and needing a longer gameplay quest, Comix Zone is a keeper. It has fantastic gameplay, great 2D graphics, and ear-charming sound that really makes this game a winner. Easily, one of the best Sega games to ever come out and easily an underrated one. It is a gamer’s dream, which needs to be played by everyone who loves video games.

Play it on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console or play it on a great emulator.
