The 2004 novel by Pascal Mercier about a lonely man who struggles with emotions of unimportance and unfulfillment served as the basis for the movie. The first sequence of the movie reveals a lot about the lead actor. Raimund is pictured in a small, dimly lit flat. Books illustrating what nearly appears like an addiction are piled high on the walls. Raimund looks around, but no one else is present. Not a voice. Nothing lively. Nothing vivacious or vibrant. It illustrates how lonely he is.

He encounters a young woman who is about to kill herself on a bridge later that wet morning as he is walking to school. Before she can leap, he grabs her and carries her to his classroom so she can collect her thoughts. She wanders out, leaving behind her raincoat and a book in the pocket as he starts his lesson. Using the book as a map, Raimund immediately sets out to discover the enigmatic young woman, and his search takes him to Lisbon, Portugal.

The focus of the narrative swiftly shifts from Raimund's efforts to find the young woman to his interest in the book. Amadeu do Prado, a guy, is credited as the author. Raimund is enthralled by the life described in the memoirs, and he sets out to piece together the tale using the accounts of others who knew Amadeu. A few people are ready to assist Raimund on his personal quest, he discovers. He also encounters some people who are hesitant to relive the traumatic and turbulent history they experienced with Amadeu.

We see flashbacks of Amadeu's life through the conversations Raimund has with different people. Amadeu is portrayed by Jack Huston. We witness his challenging upbringing and his tumultuous family dynamics. We observe his foray into a left-leaning opposition movement that opposed the Salazar administration. We witness frail relationships and shattered friendships. Even though it stumbles occasionally, it is a genuinely captivating life tale, and the historical history is obviously presented from a rigid and convincing point of view. This occasionally deprives the movie of its authenticity and turns it into something more akin to a sermon.

Although I enjoyed watching Amadeu's story develop, Raimund was the main character who captivated me throughout the film. When more of Amadeu's past is revealed, Raimund becomes more and more aware of how meaningless his own life is. He attempts to live the life he has never had through the book. This journey is handled so coolly and emotionally by Jeremy Irons. It's hardly a boisterous or ostentatious spectacle. Instead, he adopts a more subdued tone, which is perfect for the guy and his situation. I had a sincere sympathy for Raimund and fully understood his predicament.

A diverse range of excellent actors and actresses also contribute to these two parallel dramas. Huston, French actress Mélanie Laurent (one of my favorites), Charlotte Rampling, Christopher Lee, Martina Gedeck, Auguest Diehl, Bruno Ganz, Tom Courtenay, and a number of other actors all contribute a wealth of supporting roles. The quality of the acting vividly brings both to life. Each has a distinct role in Raimund's journey and Amadeu's story.

There is also a ton of gorgeous scenery, amazing settings, and intriguing camera work to discuss, but the story and your capacity to connect with it are what matter most here. Because of Jeremy Irons, the star of the movie, and the narrative he presents, I had no issue with this. There are a few sporadic rough spots and signs of strange one-sided lecturing. There is also a compelling human story that drew me in and made me care about the people deeply. Any excellent drama must have that element.
