Discovering The Differences Between "Cormorants & Herons" on the Park Lake

in phototalent •  last year

Both Cormorants and Herons are termed as "aquatic birds" commonly found around lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water. Although they do look very similar, there are some variations between the two species.

Both Cormorants and Herons are water birds and have distinct differences in appearance ~ feeding habits, nesting behavior, plumage, and flight patterns for example.

I often see both types on my local "park lake", as you can see (below) in my personal photos taken at different times in the year.

  • Appearance:

Cormorants have a more streamlined body shape and a hooked bill, while Herons have a more stately appearance with a longer, straighter bill.

  • Size:

Cormorants tend to be smaller than herons, with most species measuring between 60-100 cm in length, while herons can range from 60-137 cm in length.

  • Feeding habits:

Cormorants are diving birds that hunt fish underwater, while herons are wading birds that stalk fish and other prey along the water's edge.

  • Nesting behavior:

Cormorants typically nest in colonies on rocky cliffs or islands, while herons build their nests in trees or bushes near the water's edge.

  • Plumage:

Cormorants have dark, glossy feathers that repel water, while herons have a more varied range of plumage colors and patterns.

Flight:

Cormorants have a more direct flight style, often flying low over the water, while herons have a slower, more graceful flight pattern.
