Il Monte Forato è una delle montagne più belle delle Alpi Apuane per i suoi tratti caratteristici. Arrivando a Cardoso, località vicino a Forte dei Marmi, si può vedere chiaramente questa formazione rocciosa naturale che dà il nome al monte. In certi giorni dell'anno, da diverse città della zona, si può vedere un doppio tramonto che corrisponde ad una congiunzione, sparire, poi riapparire, come per magia. È una meravigliosa opportunità per venire qui e godere di questo spettacolo naturale. Per arrivare al Monte Forato si possono salire le scale che partono dal paese e, addentrandosi nel bosco, giungono sotto l'arco e la lunghezza è di meno di trenta metri e due. La superficie si trasforma in soli ciuffi di. l'erba cresce tra le rocce ma in primavera è un tripudio di fiori colorati. La strada passa tra i pendii erbosi, nei pressi del vecchio accampamento per il bestiame, e offre un bel panorama della costa toscana di fronte al paese di Carrara.
Salendo si vedono le cave di marmo nella valle del Torano e sotto il Monte Borla. Queste sono alcune delle cave che ancora oggi producono pregiato marmo bianco, utilizzato in passato da artisti come Michelangelo. Si dice che sia venuto personalmente in queste zone per selezionare i blocchi perfetti per il suo lavoro.

Questo viaggio è perfetto in autunno, quando la faggeta tinge il colore delle foglie e non è comune trovare i pregiati funghi porcini che vengono utilizzati per preparare molti piatti della regione.

Dopo aver attraversato gli alberi e le lunghe rocce, raggiungerai le montagne erbose che mostrano anche come le Alpi Apuane abbiano molti ecosistemi diversi. Spesso queste montagne danno l'opportunità di vedere la ricca fauna della regione come falchi, poiane, cervi, volpi e mufloni. Lungo il percorso è possibile incontrare anche la capra apuana, specie purtroppo in via di estinzione.

Dall'alto il panorama è strepitoso: sullo sfondo l'Appennino, il resto delle Alpi Apuane Settentrionali, la costa e il fondo del Lago di Vagli. Si tratta di un lago artificiale nell'antico comune di Fabbriche di Careggine. Si dice che gli abitanti originari torneranno alle loro case nella città fantasma quando, per lavori di manutenzione, la diga verrà liberata e la città ricostruita.
