FOOD FOR THOUGHT: SWEET AND SOUR

in r2cornell •  last year

I guess everyone loves good things and as much as possible does well to avoid unpleasantness. However, try what we may, life is never always sweet, it comes with an intrinsically sour package. This is true for saints as it is for sinners, it was for the Son of God as well, when he walked the earth. No one then should feel hard done by whenever life serves you the sour hand, it's all part and parcel of the complete package, and only for a season. A season of sweetness, a season of sourness and a mixed season all make life beautiful, each in its own way.

As it is true of life, equally so it is of everything and every human endeavour in life -- priesthood, marriage, relationships, any career, schooling, resting, eating, drinking, working, whatever. There's always a grey side of light, and there's nothing we can do about it than to accept it as such. Any attempt to avoid the sour and accept only the sweet will amount to rejecting it all; it's just the way it is, it is what it is.

The same holds true for every individual person we meet, and organizations we belong to, including the church. None is perfect and each person will offer us some sweetness and some sourness; it will be up to us to weigh them both and see which outweighs the other, and which sweetness we need for our lives at a particular time, and the price in sourness we have to pay for it. Everything has a price, even serving God, do not expect a walk in the park, it is more of a maneuvering of a minefield.

May God help you if you are ready.

Peace be with you!
